The brothers eventually had to deal with the past because God has the keys to the past, the present, and the future. Because we most often learn though pain, God also deals with Jacob's past.

We get wrapped up seeking the things we desire more than seeking the things we really need.  Paul is in prison, and on his way to trial, and yet is able to say, "Jesus, you're all I need."

Despite all the hardship Joseph had been through, he never complained.  People watched him.  He never got any justice for being falsely imprisoned.  But when the appointed time came, God began to put a great plan in motion.
